BEAUTY is in the details.
Microbes are life’s details.
About Me
My name is Kodi Haughn and I’m a doctoral student at the University of Alaska studying microbial ecology. I was born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii where I spent much of my curious childhood in the ocean or lush green forests. I now live in Anchorage, Alaska where glaciers and mountains have captured my adventurous spirit. Hawaii taught me to love nature and Alaska has taught me about the vulnerability of our planet. After witnessing the rapid glacial melt that Alaska is experiencing, I decided to leave a career in management and pursue my true passion of environmental research. My appreciation for the natural world gives me the motivation to study organisms that have large impacts on the environment. Microbes may be small, but they are mighty and have a BIG influence on all life. By studying microbes, I hope to further our understanding on the vital functions microorganisms perform to keep our planet habitable. I hope you’ll join me as I navigate through my PhD and continue to learn about the wonders of microscopic life in cold environments.
Research Interests
I was mesmerized by the beauty of these cold landscapes and eager to learn more about the organisms that survive these harsh environments. My research experience started during my undergrad at University of Alaska Anchorage investigating microbial communities found within proglacial environments. My doctoral work will be investigating microbial interactions within Antarctic lakes under the guidance of Dr. Brandon Briggs (UAA) and Co-Advised by Dr. Mario Muscarella (UAF). My specific interests involve understanding key microbial community members contributing to biogeochemical cycles.
